If you're a follower of Christ, there's no two ways about it. You are at war! This is not a game. This is a war that is not of this world. It is a spiritual battle against “cosmic powers and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places”. When you're in a battle, lives are at stake and somebody's going to get hurt. Some people are going to die. A war is not a war without casualties. Some will lose life. How will you survive? Paul tells us to use the following:
Truth.
Righteousness.
Being ready to share the gospel of peace.
Faith.
Salvation.
The word of God.
Prayer.
Study this list and learn all that you can about each of these and you will be prepared. I'm not going to give you a process of learning how to use the armor. Because everyone will have a different experience in how they add these items to their life. Something to remember is that in the battle of war that we are in, we have and are allies! The last piece of armor in this passage is prayer. Specifically it also mentions making supplication for all the saints. This is only one of the ways we can help each other but definitely one of the most important. Another thing to note is that we are to “keep alert with all perseverance” as we continue to carry out our prayers for others. We all need help and we all need to help each other.
…Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…
