Why do I follow Jesus Christ? I follow Him because He is the son of God and the life he lived on earth shows the character of God’s word lived perfectly as a person. He did it in such a way that he gave everything including his life for us and became the bridge between all of humanity and God. The fact that Jesus came to earth shows us that God wants a relationship with us. It also shows that following Jesus will always lead us to everything that is good. Good and evil are extremely real and our lives are a testament that this creates extreme challenges for each of us. Challenges that can be physical but more importantly of a spiritual nature. The spiritual war that we face is upon us every hour, minute and second of each day. But with the sacrifice of Jesus the spiritual war has been forever won and He can show grace upon us and has the ability to add us to His kingdom and provide us a home with Him in eternity.
How is this possible? It is possible by living a life dedicated to following Jesus Christ. Following Jesus is unique because He is actually the word of God and has been around before the time of humanity began. You may have heard the famous words that start the beginning of Genesis, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." But Jesus was around long before that and John explains to us that in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God, and without Him was not anything made that was made. The word of God became a man in the form of Jesus and He provides us with direction to an eternal home where the words happiness, joy, peace, and love all fall short, at least in the way we understand them. Paul explains it this way, "where what no eye has seen or heard nor the heart of man imagined”. In reality, it is completely indescribable in human terms.
Furthermore, His word is the best source of wisdom and instruction for building a strong moral character that will benefit every facet of your life. Relationships with everyone in your life, be it family, friends or enemies are all made better because of the truth and love that comes from learning and applying God's word in your life. Applying God's word will not guarantee a life on this earth that is, “perfect” and without challenges and trials. However, when you do apply it to dealing with the challenges of life, you will learn to see the challenges more as blessings that help you share how God's word has helped you through the storms of life.
Sometimes the simplest passages are the deepest. Truly the phrase, “still waters run deep” can be applied to the word of God. On the surface we see and hear His words as plain and matter of fact, but when we live by them the undercurrent of the word will pull us closer to God, or by contrast, neglect of the word will take us away from Him. There is much truth in the concept that God is only as near as you put Him. His word is always there for us. If only we will simply hear and do what it says.
My prayer is that you will truly feed on the word of God and share its truth with others. Don’t think too hard on the “how” but persevere in simply telling others about Jesus and the love that he has for them and His Spirit will put the “how” in motion. Let us not forget that, all things work together for good to those that love the Lord, to those who are called according to his purpose.
…For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it…
Isaiah 55:10-11
You are the purpose found in this passage and God wants you to succeed!
